You do not need a complete sporting wardrobe to enjoy your first clay lesson. Comfortable outdoor clothing and a booking with a suitable instructor are a better start.

  • Book the right introduction. Ask a CPSA-listed ground about beginner lessons and what the session includes.
  • Dress for the ground. Choose layers, weather-appropriate footwear and a jacket that lets you move comfortably.
  • Ask before you arrive. Confirm equipment, protection, accessibility, timing and any ground requirements.
  • Let the instructor lead. Follow the ground’s procedures and the instructor’s directions throughout the visit.

A day with friends can be sociable without being competitive. Leave time for a coffee afterwards; the conversation is part of the occasion.
